Ventanus’s surface war requires decisions before central command or a complete explanation of the attack is available. He works with Selaton and surviving allies to rebuild a fighting group, using local communications and underground routes rather than waiting for untouched systems to return.
His partnership with Mechanicum personnel connects military defence to the struggle for technical control. He must distinguish purposeful action from the understandable desire for revenge, and hold objectives that allow Tawren’s work to matter. Wounded during the later fighting, he still faces the necessity of withdrawing into the arcologies. His order carries resistance below instead of treating retreat as an end to duty. The novel’s epilogue looks back across the Underworld War, but this collection limits detailed chronology to the transition actually shown.
