Selaton accompanies Ventanus through the surface catastrophe and the reconstruction of a fighting force. The first recognition of Legion weapons firing against them includes his attempt to explain the event as an error. Accepting that it is deliberate changes the terms of the fight.
His work combines direct combat, support to his captain, and protection of the technical effort around Tawren. The novel also lets him feel the frustration of standing beside a data struggle he cannot conduct himself. That apparent absence from the main fight is nonetheless part of what makes the wider operation possible. In the closing withdrawal, he acknowledges that the caves are less dangerous than the ruined surface. His record belongs with Ventanus and the defenders because endurance here depends on these close practical relationships, not only on speeches or singular acts of heroism.
