Sydance appears in the surface force that connects with Ventanus’s resistance. His desire to make the Word Bearers pay is direct and violent. It gives the novel a voice for the emotional force of betrayal, beyond the controlled statements of a tactical plan.

That anger also creates a command problem. Ventanus has to preserve courage while refusing actions that would merely spend lives and munitions without improving the situation. The exchange is not a claim that emotion has no place in battle. It distinguishes the reason to fight from the selection of a fight that can serve the survivors. Sydance later remains among the men caught in the guildhall struggle. This dossier is limited to his function in those scenes and does not invent a larger biography to inflate the character index.
