The Second Destroyers are the formation Hierax proposes to end the Thoas infestation rapidly. Guilliman opposes the damage and lasting contamination that such a solution would bring. Their disputed role establishes that military efficiency cannot be measured solely through the enemy’s immediate destruction.
As the underground installation is exposed, their expertise gains a more specific purpose. Guilliman authorises deployment in relation to the inferred weapons cache and the changing situation. The later effects on the ruins coincide with his revised view of the old civilisation. This dossier keeps both parts of the arc: a tool can be necessary without making its uncontrolled use desirable, and a commander’s valuation of what is being lost can change during the battle.
