Luciel is a captain of the Ultramarines’ 209th Company. His meeting with Tchure draws on a relationship formed through earlier service and exchange. He remembers learning from the Word Bearer and treats that history as evidence of an enduring connection between them.

The conversation contains an imbalance of knowledge as well as an imbalance of intent. Tchure can refer to fighting of which Luciel has not received a proper account, while keeping the violence he intends hidden behind the forms of fraternity. Luciel and his companions are murdered before the main catastrophe. The novel distinguishes this frequently cited opening from the earlier deaths aboard the captured Campanile. This record follows that distinction and preserves Luciel’s place as a person whose trust was used, rather than reducing him to an anonymous first casualty.
